Finding an individual to provide guidance, support, influence and direction in one’s chosen field can be difficult outside of the corporate world and academia. Yet research shows that having a mentor or sponsor can significantly enhance a person’s career opportunities. MTF pairs mentors and mentees who are eager to form mutually beneficial relationships which allow young professionals to grow and keeps veterans informed of new developments in their field.
Despite its many benefits to both parties, mentoring in the veterinary profession is significantly underutilized. It's common for junior vets to feel intimidated or unsure when interacting with more senior colleagues, just as it's common for experienced vets to worry that mentoring will take up too much time and provide too-little benefit (to themselves or their practice).
However, there is plenty of evidence that inexperienced vets improve and build confidence by working with experienced, successful vets. In turn, those closer relationships lead to better working environments and stronger overall practices. The challenge arises in knowing what comprises a good mentor/mentee match and how to create an environment that values mentorship and ongoing on-the-job education.
The Maggie T Foundation is dedicated to filling the mentorship gaps for new and inexperienced veterinarians by providing them not only with access to great mentors, but also to resources that can help them identify potential mentors and position the mentor/mentee relationship for maximum success.
